Family Trips to San Francisco for Back to School Shopping

Six of our seven kids were going to school now and this meant lots of school clothes. In late August or early September, we would make a special trip to SF to shop in the stores along Market Street for school clothes. This began in the days before the Bay Bridge was built and we rode the ferry from Oakland to SF.

After a day of shopping along Market Street, we would have lunch at the Clinton Cafeteria on Powell Street and then go to the movie at the plush St. Francis Theatre on Market Street. This was a super family event of the year.

The Cliff House in San Francisco, CA. The fountain in front of the old de Young Museum. The old California Academy of the Sciences. The Crocodile pool in the Academy. An old ferry near the San Francisco Ferry Building. The view up Market Street from Twin Peaks.

The California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park
After visiting here numerous times as a kid, I came here 33 years later when I was 39 with the manuscript for my book on California’s Intertidal Invertebrates. They sent me to the Stanford University Press.

An Old Ferry Near the San Francisco Ferry Building

The Crocodile pool in the Academy
It was always an exciting stop on our family visits to Golden Gate Park.

Market Street from Twin Peaks
It was always an exciting place for our family of “Hicks” from Oakland. Note the U.S. Mint – a favorite place of my older brother Bill.

The Cliff House
As seen from the northern end of Ocean Beach.

The Fountain in Front of the Old de Young
The Indian boy played an eternal (almost) tune on his flute for the pair of attentive Mountain Lions.
