360 Degree and High-Resolution Photographs of Preserved Crabs Collected Between 1962 and 1966
About These Photos
After collecting and photographing close to 1,000 intertidal invertebrates found along the California coast in the early to mid-sixties, Robert Morris preserved many of the specimens that could not be returned to their place of collection. These specimens sat in a dark and dry box for close to 40 years before they were found shortly after his death. Amzingly, many of them were still in perfect condition.
The pictures on this page were all taken using these preserved specimens. Note that the preservation process has altered the colors of most of the specimens. This photography was done throughout 2012 and there are still many left that need to be photographed. They will be added to this page over time.
The purpose of these pictures is to present detail of each specimen that can be captured through high-resolution photos using today's photographic equipment, and the flexibilities of presentation provided by the internet. Several angles are also presented and a scale cube is used so that the reader can quickly get an idea of the specimen's size. As you can see, the scale cube is 1 cm on each side.
Hopefully, someone will find these photographs useful in their study of California's intertidal invertebrates. If you have any comments or suggestions regarding these photos, please leave a comment below.
